Happy 60th Birthday United Nations!
Today is the 60th anniversary of the birth of the United Nations (UN).
Kofi Annan took today to commemorate all of the people who have worked for the UN and their variety of important humanitarian and peace missions around the world, or who simply, have been one of those behind the scenes. He also took the time to look ahead and remind us that we still have a long way to go - an inference that the UN should exist for another 60 years in order to continue with progress in peace, human rights and general world well being.
And that is what makes this anniversary so important because for perhaps the first time in 60 years, we have to remind cynics (and the US government) that the UN is an important thing to have in the world as is the spirit of multi lateralism in resolving the world's poor.
So lets move ahead with the reforms and the objectives set out in the UN Summit of this year and adapt the UN for the next 60 years.
Though many people are a bit pessimistic on this (specially regarding the reform of the Security Council), I do believe that behind the scenes things are going well. I have the opportunity to be in contact with some of the people at the Secretariat and I have seen in the last year a change in the better in the attitude of the staff, the change in the value system for new UN recruits and also for managers. I know that they have made great strides and I do believe you have to start the change inside of you, with all of your people, before you get anything good out of it.
Look at Mexico, great change at the top but the change never seems to trickle down. I am confident that by starting with its human resources, the UN will trickle up the reform needed for another healthy 60 years. So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY UNITED NATIONS!

Sorry Rodo, I looked at your post and I agree with Friend of USA.
There was nothing in your post to convince me that the UN is anything but a failure and an abomination to peace loving people.
You say that America has no right to define terrorism. Let me tell you what terrorism is.
Terrorism is the the systematic use of terror as a means of coercion, the use of violence (as bombing) committed by groups in order to intimidate a population or government into granting their demands.
Perhaps you view terrorists as "freedom fighters" and/or "militants" fighting oppression. Tell that to the children of Beslan. Tell that to teenagers in Israel, the 3,000 who died on 9/11, the hundreds killed on a train in Spain, the hundreds of Iraqis who were blown up in the street this year.
Perhaps you view America as the oppressor. The United States of America has done more to promote freedom throughout the world than any other country. We have sacrificed more and given more of ourselves, our people, our money and our time to stand up for freedom throughout the world.
There is no way to rehabilitate the UN as it is made up of the world's worst thugs, murderers, theives and tyrants. It is a group that supports, encourages and finances the monsters who killed those children in Beslan, who blew up the trains in Spain, who bomb pizzarias and buses in Israel and yes, the same ones who flew planes into the WTC. These are the same people who are blowing up innocent Iraqis even as they try to rebuild their lives after Saddam. And you support them.
Albert Einstein once said: "The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it."
The world is a dangerous place also because of the people who don't do evil but who make it easier for others to do it.
You support a group of some of the most evil people in the world. What that does that make you?
Hey Linda.
Tnx for taking the time to read the post and commenting on it.
I just wanted to make something clear and that is actually something very important.
I don't sympathize nor approve of the methods terrorists use no matter what cause they have. You can read for example, about my writings on the bombings in Bali.
What I based the "terrorism" comment on was the fact that to your definition, at the UN summit, some Middle Eastern nations wanted to exclude those fighting an "occupying force" (ie. Iraq). The US, on the other hand, was opposed to that definition of terrorism for good reasons as you kindly point out.
The idea then became: the definition must be made in a global forum. The US can not make their definition law (no matter if it is a great definition) without consulting and negotiating with other countries. So, for example, I back including the US definition of terrorism to the UN's but I do not support the methods in which the US attempts to "make it stick"
I think it was a bit farfetched to go from that to infering I would condone such hateful actions.
As I think is farfetched to say that the UN "encourages and finances" terrorists.
